Beri ka shehad is Pakistan's most famous honey. It's thick, reddish-brown and fruity, it comes from the small beri trees of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and most of it is sold abroad, especially to the Gulf, where it's known as Sidr honey. It's also one of the most copied foods in the market. In this guide you'll learn what beri honey really is, what honey can and can't do for your health, how Sidr and beri honey are related, and the honest way to tell asli shehad from fake.
Is Post ki Khaas Baatein (Key Takeaways)
- Beri honey comes from the nectar of Ziziphus (ber) trees. "Sidr" is the Arabic name for the same tree family.
- In Pakistan, the best-known beri honey comes from districts like Karak, Kohat, Bannu and Lakki Marwat, and the bloom lasts only about a month.
- Honey gives quick natural energy and can soothe a cough, but it is still mostly sugar: about 17 g in one tablespoon.
- Popular home tests (water, thumb, flame) can't prove honey is pure. A trusted source and a lab report can.
- Never give honey to babies under 1 year old.
Beri ka Shehad Kya Hai?
Beri ka shehad (also written beri ka shahad) is named after its flower. Honey takes its taste, colour and smell from the flowers the bees visit. When bees feed mostly on one kind of flower, the honey is called monofloral. Beri honey is a monofloral honey made from the tiny flowers of the beri tree, the same tree that gives us the green and red ber fruit sold on carts every winter.
Beri ka Darakht (The Ziziphus Tree)
The beri tree belongs to the Ziziphus family. In Pakistan, the two main honey trees are the ber (Ziziphus mauritiana) and the smaller jhar beri (Ziziphus nummularia). A study of bee flora in Dera Ismail Khan named both as major sources of surplus honey in the area. These trees are tough: they grow in dry, hot land where little else flowers, which is exactly why their honey is so valued.
Pakistan Mein Beri ka Shehad Kahan Banta Hai?
Most beri honey comes from the southern and central districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Trade Development Authority of Pakistan lists Karak, Kohat, Swat and Bannu among the best honey areas in the province, and beri trees are common across Karak, Kohat, Lakki Marwat and Dera Ismail Khan. Beekeepers move their boxes to these areas when the trees flower.
Season: Sirf Ek Mahina
Beri honey is rare partly because its season is so short. Beekeepers told Dawn in 2020 that the bloom, which once lasted about two months from mid-August to mid-October, has shrunk to roughly one month, from mid-September to mid-October, because of hotter weather. Rain in that window, cutting of old trees and pesticides can wipe out a season. A Karak beekeeper estimated that about 75% of the old, healthy beri trees in his area are gone.
Sidr Honey aur Beri Honey: Kya Farq Hai?
"Sidr" is the Arabic name for trees of the Ziziphus family. In Yemen and Saudi Arabia, Sidr honey usually comes from Ziziphus spina-christi. In Pakistan, beri honey comes mostly from Ziziphus mauritiana and Ziziphus nummularia. They are close cousins from the same tree family, so in the Gulf market Pakistani beri honey is sold and loved as Sidr honey.
According to the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan, quoted in the same Dawn report, about 90% of Pakistan's beri honey is exported, and the UAE is a leading buyer. That's why good beri honey costs more at home too: you're competing with buyers in Dubai and Riyadh for the same jar.
Beri ke Shehad ke Fayde: Sach Kya Hai?
Beri honey is prized for its taste and purity, but nutritionally it is still honey. Here is what honey can honestly do.
1. Quick, Natural Energy
Honey is mostly natural sugars, roughly 38% fructose and 31% glucose, with about 17% water. One tablespoon (21 g) has around 64 calories and 17 g of sugar. That's why a spoon of honey gives a quick lift before a walk, a long drive or a busy morning. It's still sugar, so a little goes a long way. If you feel tired all the time, read our guide to the 8 common reasons for thakawat first.
2. Gale aur Khansi Mein Aaram (Soothing a Cough)
This is the best-researched use of honey. A Cochrane review of trials in children aged 1 to 18 found that honey eased cough symptoms better than no treatment and about as well as some common cough medicines. A spoon of honey in warm water or with ginger is a time-tested home remedy. A cough that lasts more than 3 weeks, or comes with fever or breathlessness, needs a doctor.
3. Antioxidants
Honey contains natural plant compounds called polyphenols that act as antioxidants. Studies of honey generally find that darker honeys tend to have more of them than pale ones. Beri honey is usually medium to dark amber.
4. Tibb aur Riwayat (Tradition)
Honey has a special place in our culture. The Quran mentions the bee and its honey in Surah An-Nahl, and classical Unani tibb has used honey for centuries as a base for majoon, so that herbs, seeds and nuts can be preserved and eaten easily. Beri honey, with its thick body and rich taste, is a traditional favourite for this.
Asli Shehad ki Pehchan Kaise Karein?
Fake and mixed honey is a real problem across South Asia. In 2020, India's Centre for Science and Environment tested 13 well-known honey brands. 10 of them failed an advanced NMR test for sugar syrup, even though most had passed the standard tests. Syrups are now made to pass simple checks, so it's important to know what actually works.
Ghar ke Tests Kitne Sahi Hain? (Home Tests)
- Water test (honey sinks in a glass of water): thick syrups sink too, so this can't prove purity.
- Thumb test (honey stays on your thumb): only catches honey thinned with water.
- Flame test (a cotton wick dipped in honey burns): mostly shows water content, not syrup.
- Jamna (crystallising): many people think honey that crystallises is fake. In fact, real honey often crystallises naturally in cold weather. Warm the jar gently in a bowl of warm water and it turns liquid again.
These tests can catch very crude fakes, but a clever fake passes all of them. Don't rely on them alone.
Asli Pehchan ke 6 Behtar Tareeqe
- Buy from a source you trust, ideally a known beekeeper or brand that tells you where and when the honey was collected.
- Read the label: look for the flower source (beri or Sidr), area, season or batch, and the maker's real address and phone number.
- Ask for a lab report from a recognised lab, such as PCSIR. Serious sellers have one.
- Beware of very low prices. Beri honey has a short season and strong export demand. A big jar at a "sasta" price is a red flag.
- Taste and smell: real beri honey has a rich, slightly fruity, caramel taste and a warm smell, not a flat, plain sweetness.
- Check the texture: it should be thick and flow slowly, in one smooth ribbon.
Beri ka Shehad Kaise aur Kitna Khayein?
- 1 to 2 teaspoons a day is a sensible amount for most healthy adults.
- Take it with warm (not boiling) water, on toast or roti, in yoghurt, or straight from the spoon in the morning.
- Don't boil or cook honey at high heat. Strong heating changes its taste and lowers its quality.
- Store it in a closed glass jar at room temperature, away from sunlight. Use a dry spoon.
Kin Logon ko Ehtiyat Karni Chahiye?
- Babies under 1 year: never give honey, not even a little on a dummy or for ghutti. Honey can carry spores that cause infant botulism, a serious illness, in babies this young.
- People with diabetes: honey raises blood sugar like other sugars. Ask your doctor before adding it to your diet.
- Bee or pollen allergy: rarely, honey can cause an allergic reaction. Stop and see a doctor if you notice itching, swelling or breathing trouble.
Beri honey is also the base of our Royal Majoon, which follows a classical Unani nuskha: 60+ natural ingredients, including nuts, seeds, herbs and saffron, mixed in pure Sidr (beri) honey with no added sugar, and PCSIR lab tested and certified. It's made for adult men as part of a healthy daily routine. If you are diabetic or take regular medicine, please check with your doctor before use.
Aksar Poochay Jaane Wale Sawal (FAQs)
Is Beri Honey the Same as Sidr Honey?
They come from the same tree family, Ziziphus. Yemeni and Saudi Sidr honey usually comes from Ziziphus spina-christi, and Pakistani beri honey mostly from Ziziphus mauritiana and Ziziphus nummularia. In the Gulf, Pakistani beri honey is sold as Sidr honey.
Why Is Beri Honey So Expensive?
The bloom lasts only about a month, many old beri trees have been cut, weather can ruin a season, and around 90% of Pakistan's beri honey is exported. Low supply and high demand push the price up.
Does Real Honey Freeze or Crystallise?
Real honey can crystallise, especially in winter. It isn't a sign of fake honey. Place the closed jar in warm water and it becomes liquid again.
Can People with Diabetes Eat Beri Honey?
Honey is mostly sugar and raises blood sugar. If you have diabetes, speak to your doctor before eating honey or any product made with honey.
