Shilajit ke fayde are talked about in every bazaar from Peshawar to Karachi, and the black, sticky resin from the mountains has been prized for centuries. But what is shilajit really, where does it come from, what does research actually say, and how do you avoid the fakes that fill the market? Here is a clear, honest guide.
Is Post ki Khaas Baatein (Key Takeaways)
- Shilajit (salajeet) is a natural resin that seeps from rocks in high mountains, formed over centuries from decomposed plant matter. Its main active compounds include fulvic acid.
- In Pakistan it is collected in the mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral.
- Research is still limited, but one 8-week trial in active men found that a purified shilajit extract helped keep muscle strength during tiring exercise.
- Raw, unpurified shilajit can carry heavy metals and other impurities. Only use purified, lab-tested shilajit.
- Home tests can't prove purity. A trusted source and a lab report can.
Shilajit Kya Hai?
Shilajit is a dark brown to black, tar-like substance that slowly oozes out of cracks in mountain rocks, mostly in the warm summer months. Scientists describe it as a mix of humic substances, mainly fulvic acid and humic acid, along with minerals, formed as plant material breaks down and is pressed between rock layers over a very long time.
It is known by many names: shilajit or salajeet in Pakistan and India, and mumijo or mumie in Central Asia and Russia. In Ayurveda it is counted among the rasayana, or rejuvenating tonics, and Unani hakeems have used it for generations in classical nuskhas for strength.
Shilajit Kahan se Aata Hai?
Shilajit is found in high mountain ranges across Asia, including the Himalayas, the Karakoram and the Hindu Kush, and also in places like the Altai and Caucasus mountains. In Pakistan, it is collected by mountain families in Gilgit-Baltistan (around Skardu, Shigar and nearby valleys) and in Chitral.
Kaise Nikala aur Saaf Kiya Jata Hai?
Collectors climb to the rock faces in summer and scrape off the raw shilajit, which is mixed with soil, stone and plant bits. Raw shilajit is not ready to eat. Traditionally it is dissolved in water, filtered to remove the dirt, and then slowly dried, often in the sun, until a clean, thick resin remains. Modern makers use similar water extraction and filtering, followed by lab tests for purity and heavy metals.
Shilajit ke Fayde: Research Kya Kehti Hai?
Shilajit has a long traditional reputation as a strength tonic. Scientific research is growing, but it is still limited and many studies are small or done in animals. Here is what is reasonably supported.
1. Taqat aur Thakawat (Strength Under Fatigue)
In a 2019 study in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 63 recreationally active men took a purified shilajit extract (250 mg or 500 mg a day) or a placebo for 8 weeks. The 500 mg group held on to more of their muscle strength after a tiring exercise test than the other groups. The authors called it a promising early result and said more research is needed.
2. Fulvic Acid aur Minerals
Fulvic acid is the compound most linked with shilajit, and lab studies suggest it has antioxidant activity. How much you get varies hugely between products: when ConsumerLab tested eight popular shilajit supplements in 2024, fulvic acid ranged from about 7 mg to over 2,200 mg per serving. That's one more reason to buy from a maker who tests and labels clearly.
3. Riwayati Istemal (Traditional Use)
In Ayurveda and Unani tibb, shilajit has traditionally been used as a general tonic for strength, energy and stamina, usually in small amounts and often mixed with other ingredients, like honey and herbs in a majoon. Traditional use tells us what people have valued for centuries, but it is not the same as proof from modern trials.
Be careful with sellers who promise that shilajit cures diseases, works "100%" or shows results in a fixed number of days. The honest picture is that it is a promising traditional ingredient with some early research, best used as part of a healthy routine.
Asli Shilajit Kaise Pehchanein?
Because good shilajit is rare and costly, the market is full of fakes made with other resins, gums, tar or fillers, and of raw shilajit sold without proper cleaning.
Ghar ke Tests (Home Tests)
- Garam pani test: pure resin usually dissolves in warm water, turning it golden brown, without leaving much grit behind.
- Garmi aur sardi test: good resin softens in the warmth of your hand and hardens when cold.
- Smell: real shilajit has a strong, earthy, smoky smell, not a sweet or chemical one.
These checks can catch some crude fakes, but they cannot tell you whether shilajit is free of heavy metals, fungi or hidden additives. Only a lab test can.
Behtar Tareeqe (Better Ways to Check)
- Ask where it comes from: a good seller can tell you the area and how it was purified.
- Ask for a lab report that covers heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium) from a recognised lab.
- Check the label: purified shilajit, amount per serving, batch, expiry and the maker's real address and phone number.
- Avoid very cheap "pure shilajit" and anything sold loose, unlabelled or as "raw".
- Avoid big promises. Cure claims and "no side effects" are red flags.
Shilajit Kaise aur Kitna Lein?
- Keep the amount small. Studies have used about 250 to 500 mg a day of purified extract. Follow the dose on your product's label and don't take more.
- Take it with warm water, milk or tea, or as part of a ready-made preparation such as a majoon.
- Be regular rather than taking large amounts now and then.
- Store it in a closed container, away from heat and moisture.
Kin Logon ko Ehtiyat Karni Chahiye?
- Never eat raw or unpurified shilajit. It can contain heavy metals, fungi and other impurities.
- People with diabetes: shilajit may lower blood sugar, which can add to the effect of diabetes medicines. Ask your doctor first.
- Anyone on regular medicine, or with kidney problems, gout or high uric acid, or a heart condition: check with your doctor before use.
- Children: shilajit is not for children.
- Stop and see a doctor if you notice a rash, dizziness, a racing heart or stomach upset.

Aksar Poochay Jaane Wale Sawal (FAQs)
What Is Shilajit Called in Urdu?
It is usually called salajeet (سلاجیت). The word shilajit comes from the Sanskrit shilajatu.
Is Shilajit Safe to Take Every Day?
Studies of purified shilajit in small daily amounts, for up to a few months, have found it generally well tolerated in healthy adults. Long-term safety hasn't been fully studied, so stick to the label dose and buy only purified, lab-tested shilajit.
Which Shilajit Is Best: Resin, Powder or Capsules?
The form matters less than purity. Resin is the traditional form, while powders and capsules are easier to measure. Whatever the form, look for purified shilajit with a lab report.
Can Shilajit Be Taken with Honey?
Yes. Mixing shilajit with honey is a traditional way to take it, and it is how shilajit is used in many classical majoons.
